CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
ROSALIND

Vocal Part: Mezzo-Soprano
Our heroine, Daughter of the banished Duke. Rosalind uses her exile to the Forest of Arden to take charge of her own destiny. She is strong-willed, good-hearted, resourceful, and charming. Rosalind spends the majority of the show disguised as a young man named Ganymede, and tutors her romantic interest, Orlando, in the ways of love.
CELIA
Gender: Female
Part Size: Lead
Vocal Part: Soprano
Rosalind’s cousin and dearest friend, who follows her into exile in the Forest of Arden. Celia brings an airy, feminine balance to Rosalind. She is naïve, yet very practical, and the ways of love are a mystery to her until near the end of the show when she finds her bride, Oliver.
ORLANDO
Gender: Male
Part Size: Lead
Vocal Part: Tenor
An athletic and attractive young musician, under the neglectful care of his elder sister. He is a true romantic, constantly writing love songs for his “lost” love Rosalind and hanging them throughout the forest. Though he has no formal education, by the end of the play he proves himself a true hero and a perfect match for Rosalind.
MARTEXT
Gender: Female
Part Size: Supporting
Vocal Part: Mezzo-Soprano
The High Priestess of The Forest of Arden. She is a strikingly beautiful woman with a commanding, maternal presence. She wields powerful magic and speaks for the Forest, which serves as a sort of deity for those who dwell there. She will serve as a narrator and guide to the audience throughout the play.
TOUCHSTONE
Gender: Male
Part Size: Supporting
Vocal Part: Tenor
An arrogant and flamboyant Lord in the court of Duke Fredrick. He is filled with energy and serves as a comic relief to our heroes, filling the classic Shakespearean “clown” role. While in the Forest of Arden, he falls in love with Shepherd named Audrey, who brings out the genuine emotions behind his clownish façade.
OLIVER
Gender: Female
Part Size: Supporting
Vocal Part: Alto
Orlando’s domineering and envious older sister, who has made him a servant in his own home. A loveless young woman, Oliver follows Orlando into the Forest of Arden with the intention of killing him, but when Orlando saves her life and she finds true love in Celia, she is transformed and reconciles with her brother.
AUDREY
Gender: Male

Vocal Part: Tenor
An innocent, yet charismatic young shepherd. He is a perfect match for Touchstone, and their love is hilarious, rapturous, and show-stopping.
SILVIUS
Gender: Male

Vocal Part: Tenor
A passionate, awkward shepherd. He is desperately in love with Phebe, who ignores all of his advances. He will stop at nothing to impress his disdainful love interest.
PHEBE
Gender: Male
Part Size: Supporting
Vocal Part: Tenor
A vain and conceited young shepherd. He is very social and sexually driven, but has absolutely no interest in Silvius. Through a case of mistaken identity, this pair of comical lovers find their way into each other’s arms by the play’s conclusion.
