RICHARD (Clears throat) I want to be the guy out front. I want to be the big
cheese downtown and have my hands in all things Dallas. I want money
and lots of it and I want power. You handle the shady business and I
cover you, you get major profits. We protect each other’s interest.
MARYANNE: He’s just a visionary! He’s heard of small towns all over the nation of all Black residents and businesses and thriving communities. He wants our elite Black folk to have their own upscale living in neighborhoods here in Dallas.
LADY V OH little sister! Don’t you look ravishing this evening!. I see Richard got you to come over to Benny’s tonight. Do Mommy and Daddy know? You got church in the morning, ain’t you out a little late?
Sing a blues number from 20’s music. Think Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith
If you don’t make a move soon I will. I cannot bear seeing you falling all over him.
I have a little something you can give him that’ll put him out. You can leave and no one will be the wiser. I love you and will do anything to have you. Never forget that.
Ms. St. Frances. It is very good to see you as always. The place is abuzz tonight. Lady V sure can bring a crowd. Lissen I overheard Smoot today and they are planning a round up tonight. Be careful.
I don’t like him either. I’m gonna keep my eyes on him tonight. How you wanna play him?(take out his knife)You got it Benny! Chaz can handle Smoot’s boys.
