Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.
Act 1 is from Victor’s point of view. He begins by telling of his childhood. Born into a wealthy Genevan family, Victor has a strong desire to understand the world. He is obsessed with studying theories of alchemists, though when he is older, he realizes that such theories are considerably outdated.
At the university, he excels at chemistry and other sciences, soon developing a secret technique to impart life to non-living matter. He undertakes the creation of a humanoid.
Act 2, the Creature, Intelligent and articulate, relates his first days of life, living alone in the wilderness. He found that people were afraid of and hated him due to his appearance. The creature compares himself with the “fallen” angel. Speaking to Frankenstein, the monster says “I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel”.
Victor Frankenstein (approx. 25-35), Tenor: Victor, born of a prominent, wealthy family in Geneva, is a brilliant young scientist whose ambition and talent lead him to the ability to instill life in a form assembled from the bodies of the deceased. His indecision and lack of foresight result in the destruction of all he holds dear at the hands of his own creation.
The Creature (age undetermined), Tenor: The animated being fashioned by Victor Frankenstein, the Creature’s initial desire for companionship and goodness gives way to murderous vengeance as a result of the abandonment and abuse he experiences because of his size and appearance.
Claire Frankenstein (approx. 27-37), Mezzo soprano: Victor’s older sister, Claire has always been Victor’s greatest supporter and protector. Her nurturing care and strength often steadied Victor when his obsessive thirst for knowledge caused him to neglect his own health. Her dedication to her younger brother tragically leads to her downfall
Elizabeth Lavenza (approx. 20-30), Soprano: Friends since childhood, Elizabeth is Victor’s fiancée. While she supports Victor’s pursuit of discovery and eminence, she longs for the day when his ambition will be satisfied, and his attention will turn solely to her.
William FrankensteinSpoken dialogue, sings as part of the ensemble : Victor’s younger brother, William is seen only in the first act. He idolizes his older siblings and is characterized by Victor as “his loyal page.” William is the first victim of the Creature’s quest for vengeance.
Mrs. Fife (broad possible age range: 30’s-60’s), Mezzo soprano: Mrs. Fife, along with her husband, is a crooked undertaker preying on the bereaved of London. Approached by Victor as he seeks “supplies” to assemble a second creation, Mrs. F. memorably shares her opportunistic philosophy on life and crime.
Mr. Fife (broad possible age range: 30’s-60’s), Baritone: Mr. Fife, along with his wife, is a crooked undertaker preying on the bereaved of London. Approached by Victor as he seeks “supplies” to assemble a second creation, Mr. F. memorably shares his opportunistic philosophy on life and crime.
