Synopsis:
Welcome to Southie, a Boston neighborhood where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo, where this month’s paycheck covers last month’s bills, and where Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Facing eviction and scrambling to catch a break, Margie thinks an old fling who’s made it out of Southie might be her ticket to a fresh new start.
Cast: 4 women, 2 men
Margie Walsh – late 40s – 60 – white – She’s been beaten down by life for years between terrible, low wage, low skill jobs, raising a handicapped adult daughter, being alone. She lacks confidence to get herself out of most situations she jumps into and lashes out when cornered with a fairly sharp wit. Her greatest redeeming quality is that she’ll do anything for her daughter.
Mike – late 40s – 60 – white – Ex high school boyfriend of Margie who is now a married and successful doctor. Mike really doesn’t want to see or talk with Margie as he’s of a different “class” now and really wants to keep her stories of his past from his beautiful, young wife and kids. He’s not necessarily cruel but he’s not welcoming to Margie.
Kate – late 20s – 40 – black – Mike’s wife. She’s by far the nicest person in the story. Happy with her charmed life, husband and children, she tries to stay nice as Margie and Mike get mean.
Dottie – (Precast) 60s and up – any ethnicity – Landlady for Margie’s apartment and reluctant babysitter for Margie’s daughter. She rides the line between friend and desperate landlord as Margie is always late and friendship only goes so far.
Jean – around 30 – any ethnicity – Margie’s younger friend who’s just, well, mean. The young friend around who’s constantly snarky about life.
Stevie – 20s – any ethnicity – The manager of a dollar store where Margie works for the first scene at least. He’s far too young to be in charge of someone as mature and irascible Margie. He’s very sweet and understanding but in way over his well-meaning head when having to confront her about her constant lateness.
COVID Protocols – We’re still in it so masks and vaccination at the door. If you are immunocompromised or otherwise unvaccinated, reach out to us for different protocols.
