REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES:
• Rehearsals beginning April 18th. Monday – Thursday evenings, and Saturdays (daytime).
• Performances are June 17th, 2022 – July 17, 2022 w/ possible extension through August 14th, 2022.
• Must be fully vaccinated to participate in this production.
ARENA Synopsis: Celebrating the history and music of LA’s famous nightclubs, ARENA & Circus Disco, this story takes us through Lucio Torrez’s 1990’s coming of age & coming out journey, as he struggles with the duality of growing up in a strictly Christian household and needing to experience his true identity in a place of love, friendships, music, and discovery.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
LUCIO TORREZ: 18 to 28 years old, Latino male. Lead, Tenor, no dancing required. The church Music Minister in the Apostolic church where he was raised and that his parent’s Pastor. Caught in a closeted relationship with the church guitar player, Ricky Soto. Faced with his father’s ultimatum to go to a gay conversion group, he must choose between the music ministry and a place with his family and the church. Can he find his true voice?
OCTAVIO VASQUEZ: Supporting, Bass/Tenor, 20’s Latino gay male, strong dancer. Came to Los Angeles to be a model and quickly found himself on the streets. His good looks and hot body got him to the front of the line at Arena on his first night there, and into the House of Mirage (a chosen Family/Tribe led by Ms. Martin).
JOHNNY LOZANO: Supporting, Tenor, 20’s Latino gay male. Jerry’s boyfriend since high school. A talented painter and make-up artist living with AIDS since he was 16. Jerry is his entire world and would do nothing to hurt him. Addicted to Crystal Meth. He is the kindest, most caring person, and is always ready to help anyone in need. No dancing required.
NICK LOPEZ: Supporting, 20’s Latino gay male. Aspiring artist, grew up in the Aliso Village projects in Boyle Heights. Met Ms. Martin as a young teen and joined the House of Mirage. Attends Cal State L.A. Very street-smart with swag. Hip-Hop dancer, rapper/singer.
