Totie Fields was an American stand-up comedian. She was considered as one of the funniest women of Las Vegas and daytime TV shows. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she started singing on radio at an early age. She began giving singing and stand-up comedy performances at Boston clubs from the age of 20, but she became most popular later as a guest comic for the Mike Douglas and Jack Paar TV talk shows. She was short and stocky and engaged in self-deprecating humor that established a warm connection to her audiences who found her lovable and connected with her yearning to be beautiful–or at least a little thinner and taller. Vulnerability and warmth would be the qualities to convey for those auditioning for this role. This show’s Totie should be able to make her songs and humor relatable and at times touching.
