Peer Gynt- Male, 30+ – is the central protagonist in this play. He is a character who runs from commitment, and who is completely selfish, having little concern for the sacrifices that others are forced to make in accommodating him. The character is made of the stuff of legendary heroes and sometimes confused with them in his own mind. He portrayed at three ages: twenty, middle-aged, and elderly, and the journey of the play spans nearly his entire life.
Aase – Female, 50+ – Peer’s devoted mother, who makes many sacrifices for him. A lively and pathetic character, that symbolizes maternal love. Her love permits her to scold Peer but will not allow anyone else to criticize him.
Solveig – Female, 30+ – Peer’s ideal love, always beautiful and always patient. She represents a love, holy and remote but everlasting. Singing role.
Kari/ The Lean One / First Bird / Troll – Female, 30+
Kari is a sweet and devoted friend to Peet’s mother, Aase. She is moral and emotional support. On the other hand, The Lean One is this play’s version of the devil, who refuses Gynt entry to hell. Versatility and character creation are key. Will double as others.
Annita, Ingrid, The Green Clad Woman – Female, 20-40
The female characters this actor will take on are often the object of Peet’s lustful desire and in turn become his enemies. These women are rebellious, alluring, cunning, and vengeful. Femme fatales. Will double as others.
Helga / Brat/ Troll- Female, 20’s
Young and innocent, Helga is very curious and sweet. Will double as the brat, who is the complete opposite. A young looking actor that can be both the ideal child and the demon child. Will double as others.
The smith Aslak/ Master Cotton Male / Troll 20 + a
A strong and imposing figure, often at odds with Peer Gynt and beloved by the townspeople. Handsome and athletic. Will double both as a criminal named Master Cotton, a Captain, and others.
Bridegroom / Begriffenfeldt / Troll- Male, 20-39
Comedic and character-y. Handsome, but whiney as the Bridegroom. Doubles as a madman, a criminal, and several others.
The Great Boyg / Mother of the Bridegroom 50+
The Great Boyg is the voice of the darkness that consumes us all. It represents fear and death and can only be heard, not seen. Cold and menacing. As Mother of the Bridegroom, authoritative, sharp, and stern. Will double as others.
Troll King of Dovre / Solveig’s Father Male, 50+
King of the trolls and the father of the woman in green, whom Peer seeks to marry. Authoritative, bombastic, wiley, immoral, and philosophic. Will double as Father of the Bridegroom and others.
