Catalina : El Salvadoran, 12
Catalina is precocious, but in ways different from children who grow up in a stable environment. She can sense impending danger and suss out the true motives of people. When you grow up in an El Salvadoran barrio racked by gang violence, you tend to hone your instincts for survival at a very young age. When her father is murdered, Catalina and her mother decide to make a perilous journey to the United States. And in the desert wilderness of the Arizona borderlands, her mother disappears, and Catalina has to rely on all her acuities if she is to make it out alive.
Viento: Mexican, Late 20’s early 30’s
Viento personifies the stereotype of a coyote — reed-thin, slicked-back hair and an insolent manner. He can also be sly and cruel. But beneath the bravado and flash lies deep insecurity and fear; the kind of fear that gnaws at a man who knows death is around the corner and is convinced that when it comes, it will arrive with great violence.
