ESTHER – Mid-30s. Black. She/her. A seamstress in New York City who creates custom undergarments for women at all levels of society. Lives alone and craves love and connection. She has a quietly determined entrepreneurial drive that pushes her to create a more upwardly mobile and comfortable life for herself. Esther listens intensely and is someone many types of people confiding in. Esther is frequently described by others as plain. Some onstage intimacy.
GEORGE – 35-50. Black. He/him. A Barbadian man who works on the Panama Canal. Maintains a romantic correspondence with Esther but harbors secrets. Barbadian dialect required. Some onstage intimacy.
MAYME – 25-45. Black. She/her. A prostitute who works in the Tenderloin District. Maintains a close friendship with Esther despite the latter’s disapproval of sex work. A talented musician, Mayme moved to New York with the dream of playing ragtime piano in New York and Europe. Some onstage intimacy.
MRS. VAN BUREN – 25-35. White. She/her. A wealthy customer of Esther’s. She lives in the rarified world of Upper East Side society but is lonely and insecure. Comes from modest Southern background but has generally kept it hidden from others in high society. Some onstage intimacy.
MR. MARKS – 25-45. White (Romanian Jew). He/him. A fabric salesman, he is an immigrant to the United States. He is a passionate man who loves the beautiful fabrics he sells and the stories behind him. Esther is his customer and friend, and the deep connection between them is thwarted due to the constraints of his Orthodoxy and societal norms of the day.
MRS. DICKSON – 35-50. Black. She/her. Owns the boarding house where Esther lives. She is a well-to-do woman who feels somewhat protective of Esther.
