male and female role
I have an extremely tall order here. Looking to cast the two leads (male and female) in an entirely improvised and HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL movie: “Doctor Faustus.” Non-union. To be shot over the course of twenty-four hours in a movie set that will be dressed up to look like a medieval laboratory. Non-union. To be shot this October in Lawrenceville, GA. Both roles pay $500. Extremely mentally demanding. Will be entered into film festivals. Please read this entire post before submitting.
Story: Set in the 16th century, Doctor Yohannas Faustus is the most learned man of his era. He has doctorates in theology, medicine, and law. But he still longs to know everything. Driven by his lust for supreme knowledge, he summons up the Devil from the pits of Hell. They strike a bargain. Faustus will have 24 hours to treat the Devil as his slave, asking her (because of course, the Devil is female) any questions and making any demands, and the Devil will comply. But upon the stoke of midnight, Faustus will be condemned to the scorching flames of Hell. Faustus agrees, too much blinded by his desires to see his impending doom.
A bearded adult man. Grandiose. A wealth of information. Has spent his whole life studying the Bible, the writings of early Church fathers, and Greek philosophers. Obsessed with the secrets workings of the universe. Frustrated with God for refusing him the wisdom that he feels that he is entitled to. Proud of his achievements of fighting the plague. A lot of reading will be required for this role. The actor selected for the role will be required to read different texts that a medical alchemist would have read.
Role: Mephistopheles, the Devil
So the actress selected for this role is going to have full reign with deciding how to interpret this character. Is Mephistopheles a Devil or THE Devil? Is Mephistopheles a fallen angel, or has she been selected by God to be a tester of humanity? Whoever Mephistopheles is, she knows almost everything. She has existed since the dawn of Man. She has literally seen it all. She is happy to keep Faustus entertained with answers and stories. She understands that a lust for knowledge is no different from sexual lust or gluttony. It’s all just another form of appetite. This role requires a ton of research. Actress will be required to study the history of how the concept of Satan developed in Ancient Judaism and Christianity, as well as different occult beliefs from the Ancient to the Medieval Eras.
This movie is going to be shot as a documentary. In the first shot of the movie, Faustus uses magic to create enchant a mirror so that it records and preserves the experiences that it reflects. Faustus orders his mute, slow-witted servants to use this mirror to record his experiences with Mephistopheles. The entire movie will be shot like this. I will have a couple of camera-men to play the role of these servants, and during this time, they will not say a word. They will be as invisible as possible.
I myself will be taking a backseat role as the director in this movie. There is an old saying that film is the director’s medium and the theatre is the actor’s medium. I am flipping that on its head. This movie will be (mostly) created on the spot by the actors. Will be behind the scenes, throwing little curveballs for the actors to react to. Most of the prep work will be handled by my camera men and assistants. Actors will see very little of me.
This movie will be set from the time that Faustus first gets it into his head to summon the Devil, to the time that he is condemned to Hell. Needless to say, these roles call for highly confident, adventurous actors. I am looking for actors who can see this movie like going on a hike in an exotic location. You don’t know exactly what is going to happen, but you’re prepared for (almost) anything.
Actors will not meet each other until they are in costume, in character, and the first scene begins.
Historical Background: Doctor Faustus was a real historical figure. He lived during the time of Martin Luther, the leader of the Protestant Reformation (Matin Luther may make an appearance in this movie, trying to help save Faustus’ soul). There are many different stories about Faustus. Supposedly, he travelled around Europe, using magic tricks to trick people and make money. He was killed in a chemical experiment that went wrong and led to an explosion. After his dead, Luther said that Faustus was a sorcerer who used black magic to deceive people. The legends about him grew, and eventually Christopher Marlowe (a contemporary playwright of William Shakespeare) wrote a play about him. Marlowe’s play makes Mephistopheles extremely sympathetic, and turns Faustus into a tragic figure. The image of an angel and devil sitting on someone’s shoulder comes from this play. Another contributor to the Faust legend was the German poet Goethe, who wrote Faustus as a hero trying to find true happiness. The legend of Faustus is set during the transition period between the medieval era and the enlightenment. The power of the Christian Church was being threatened by the Protestant split and by the rise of humanism. Faustus’ story reflects these anxieties.
