“Edmonton” is a brand new script, freely adapted from a 17th century English play called “The Witch of Edmonton” and the historical trial of Elizabeth Sawyer. In “Edmonton,” the much-maligned beggar Liz Sawyer, driven by hardship to the practice of black magic, becomes a public scapegoat when seneschal Frank Thorney’s wife is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Other characters include Tom, the traveling thief; the mercurial knight Sir Arthur Clarington; the two women Frank has promised to marry, Susan and Winnifride, one of whom is murdered and returns to the stage as a vengeful ghost; Susan’s father; Frank’s father; and Peter Poldavis, a justice of the peace.
The approach to casting will be such that these roles can all be played by actors with a wide variety of backgrounds and identities. Actors age 18+ of any gender, race, or ethnicity are encouraged to audition. A small stipend will be offered to all actors.
