The Mixing Texts Collective (Kwikstep, Rokafella, Yako 440, Jacinth Greywoode, Rebecca Hart, Aaron Jafferis, Morgan Smart) is casting the hip-hop musical How to Break for workshop rehearsal at Hi-ARTS in NYC July 20-30, as a part of their Critical Breaks program, and subsequent productions.
18-year-old female (may be played by any age actress who could pass for 18). Latinx and/or Black. Competitive, perfectionist, quick-witted, deep. Popping skills a must. Acting/singing/rapping experience a plus but not required. Spanish-speaking a plus.
17-year-old male (may be played by any age actor who could pass for 17). Open-hearted, optimistic, goofball, flirt, wise beyond his years. B-boy (breaking) skills a must. Acting/singing/rapping experience a plus but not required. Black or Latinx or South Asian or Middle Eastern or mixed-race.
Age 28-45. Folksy guitar-playing Black woman yoga teacher with unexpected bite. Guitar and singing skills a must.
An electric collision of theatre, breaking & lyrical flow, How to Break is a compelling new musical about two teen dancers battling for control over their own bodies. Differences in race, class & language between Ana, Joel, & their treatment team – a doctor, music therapist & beatboxing nurse – create life-threatening rifts and reveal the hidden strengths of vulnerability.
Rehearsals 5-6 hours/day, pay is $20/hour.
